Ghost Rider is a 2007 American supernatural superhero film written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, a stunt motorcycle rider who makes a deal with the devil to protect the world from evil and in return must go on an eternal ride as Ghost Rider. Johnny Blaze becomes "the Devil's bounty hunter", the Ghost Rider. He is bound to an eternal servitude under Satan, trying to save his father and prevent evil from taking over Earth. In return, he is given extraordinary powers such as immortality as well as intense regenerative abilities which allow him to survive any injury either from humans or from demons with ease; his regenerative abilities play a major role in some of the plot points. The Rider catches up with Johnny and pins him to the floor with a "Penance Stare" that makes Johnny see visions of all the evil he has done in his lifetime and in his current life. He tracks down Blackheart in New York City, after Hell's minions kidnap Roxanne, and battles him in Times Square. After the Rider defeats Blackheart's minions, Blackheart manages to escape by making a deal with some demons who take him away. The Rider then talks to Roxanne about Johnny's disappearance (since the battle is over) and tells her that they meet again when she least expects it. He then drives away into the desert, presumably to continue his search for Blackheart. The film was based on a screenplay titled "Motorhead", written by David S. Goyer in 1998 and originally intended to be a sequel to "Ghost Rider". Goyer expanded the story, and later rewritten it as a standalone screenplay with Brian Helgeland. The project went into development hell because of several problems: Nicolas Cage signed on to star, than dropped out and Wesley Snipes expressed interest and later turned down the role. In 2004, Goyer realized he could not get the rights to make "Motorhead" into a film; instead he changed its title and used parts of his original script in what became "Ghost Rider". "Ghost Rider" was filmed in Los Angeles, California on "digital backlot", which is an environment created by computer-controlled lighting and huge digital projectors. The film's visual effects were created by Sony Pictures Imageworks. Ghost Rider was released on February 16, 2007 in 3,788 theaters with a domestic box office gross of $45 million on its opening weekend, topping the weekend box office. Ghost Rider went on to gross $132.8 million domestically and $141 million internationally for a worldwide total of $274.8 million with an estimated budget of $110 million; it was considered to be a financial failure.
