As the album title suggests, it's a concept album based on the novel "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain. The story is about a young boy in 19th century Missouri who pokes his nose into everyone's business, leading to all types of trouble for him, and he needs to pay off an outstanding debt or face severe consequences. That said, "Tom Sawyer" (the song) is the only track on the entire CD that doesn't follow this thread. The band instead discusses their childhood adventures with each other and how they became Rush - something which would invariably happen when you grow up together. Geddy Lee states "... we're talking about how we got together, musically - that's what the album is all about. We're not trying to do a 'concept' album, in which you see a character in a theatre."All songs written by Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart. As of November 2012, Clockwork Angels has sold over 931,000 copies in USA and over 1.2 million copies worldwide - making it the band's most popular album since their eponymous debut from 1977 which sold 1.7 million copies in the USA alone.
